Blog Review! Some Constructive Criticism

Today I'm going to take a look at a classmate's blog titled Ellen Banach by Ellen Banach. I'll be talking about what I like about it and some things she could do to add on to what is already a decent looking blog!

THE PROS

  • The background is pretty and soft on the eyes. It reminds me of a watercolor painting!
  •  The pictures are spaced out well and neat.
  • Good read! I enjoyed her blog posts, some good insight on what shes like and her personality.
  • Shes got a knack for design. Keep it up!
  • Adding a video link was a nice touch.

The Cons

  • The font size for her second blog post, was a little too tiny for my taste. Should keep some consistency was font size and color for all blog posts.
  • The blog title could use a little more spice!
  • Maybe put up some links to other social media accounts so she can get her blog out there and get more followers on her twitter or instagram pages.
Overall I'd say at this point a lot of our blog posts all kind of look the same. With some time and a few more posts this blog will end up looking and reading pretty well. Keep up the good work.

Death & Social Media : What Happens To Our Profiles When We Die?

I've always wondered about who gets control of my social media accounts after I die. Will my social media updates live on forever and become immortal? Or will they disappear into the nether regions of the internet in some kind of digital graveyard? In What Happens To Your Social Media Profiles When You Die? special Infographics outline what happens to our digital lives when we die.

The wonderful infographic designed by WebPageFX   begins by asking you to take into account In this day and age most everyone has a social media account. I guess the real question is if social media accounts get deleted or managed by someone else? The articles info graphic is split up into four parts and details the process.

  • Part One talks about ownership rights. Who gets to have access to my profiles? Facebook,Twitter,Pintrest, Linkedn, and Google all agree to respect the deceased. Nobody can touch your profiles unless you authorize someone to take control of it before you die

  • Part Two outlines the amount of time a profile has before a social media outlet deactivates the account. They all vary. Google waits nine months whereas Pintrest never deactivates.

  • Part Three asks if others can claim a deceased's username. All but Facebook and Linkedn say no.

  • Part Four lists the requirements for deactivation of an account. Which is very important for members of the diseased.

Paul Acosta + Google = Bear Attack in Alaska

A google search for my name gave me some pretty boring search results. For the most part, just my name will yield countless mugshots of other "Acostas" on the internet and latin musicians. I knew if I was going to get anything I'd have to refine my search tactics a little better. What better way to find all the internets easter eggs of myself than to start off by adding my hometown of Juneau,Alaska after my name. I was reminded of my only claim to fame..

So a bear broke into our place while we were inside it in 2005. No big deal. I was surprised to find various news outlets covering the story. I still remember the next day after the attack when we got a bunch of photographers and news reporters rummaging about our property like it was some crime scene. For the most part all the articles read the same. Search results often came up with the same rehashed story.
We also made the "Weird But True" column for the New York Post. The facts weren't reported very well however, because it reads that I was the one asleep in the living room when the bear broke in when it was really my dad. I couldn't find too much of anything else other than this. A majority of other news outlets took little snippets from the original Juneau Empire article and someone even posted the article in a forum for Fortean Times titled "Out of Place Animals."

How I tell the story to my friends

what my dad and I saw for about an hour

Blog Review! The Blog of Tim Ferris: Experiments in Lifestyle Design

If the writing is good, they will come. That just goes without saying. Good blogs will bring people to their sites, but great blogs will have people coming back.  Posts generally have to be either really inspiring/motivational or really informative and funny for me to want to stay updated. I found a blog with a great mixture of all. The Blog of Timothy Ferris : Experiments in Lifestyle Design has tons of great content with some original, informative, and rather insightful blog posts. He is also the author of the highly acclaimed "4 Hour Series" books such as "The 4-Hour Work Week" and "The 4-Hour Chef"
As you enter the homepage and scroll your way towards the top you'll find a nicely designed navigation bar, as well as links to his various books which he markets well and often throughout the blog. In addition to the various stories and interesting headlines for his articles, Ferris also has a large e-mail subscription service where you can join the 300,000+ subscribers who have signed up for the same content but without any of the spam/ads you would get on his blog. Ferris seems to have a pretty great grasp on digital marketing. The well written posts on interesting subjects with headlines like "The Art of Strategic Laziness" "The Not To Do List: 9 Habits to Stop now" are great sneak peaks into the contents of the books he is trying to market. If you like the articles, chances are you'd probably like his books as well. Some articles are very ambitious and long but are worth it. Articles like "12 Rules for Learning Foreign Languages For The First Time-The Only Post You'll Ever Need" contain well thought-out and written tips with various links to some useful resources and is very well edited. This in conjunction with some quirky Youtube videos that pair well with the dense amount of information he delivers for the article, it's no wonder that the thread count in the comments section reaches well over 250. The comments are very appreciative, and Ferris does a great job at answering any questions readers might have. Tim Ferris's Blog is very well edited, the articles read very easily and flow well into a lot of interesting facts supporting the headlines. Credibility is always given, as there are always links to other things related to the topic. I find that it gives the site much more replay value, as it creates layers to the site. I especially like the fact that he has all the articles organized and categorized on the side for easy navigation, as well as "Related and Recommended" section at the bottom of all the articles that make the website so much more cohesive.  Overall, The Blog of Timothy Ferris has some very well constructed stories that bring out his point of view very well. It's inspiring to read about the many things he has learned in his life. All the articles are fun, easy to read, and very relateable.
